Currently, I work for a very reputable and stable company. Pay is good and we get by on it. Overall no complaints except that I can't "grow" myself in my current role.

I was made an offer that would be a substantial pay increase and definitely a better growth opportunity for myself. However, it would require me to relocate and frankly, I have heard hit or miss if the company will be bought up in the near future. Can be a bit scary.

With that said, how do you guys/gals weigh out your pros and cons here? The area I am moving too is booming with companies in my field, so I feel I could, in a worse case scenario, find something else if need be......but I don't want to uproot my family, relocate, get a house, settle in, and then let go. Maybe just cold feet on my end.

In your gut, you already know the answer. Pay attention to it.

Where would you be relocating? Are they paying for it? Do you have children? Are their jobs available where you would move?

A lot of factors weigh into this. It could be a great job prospect that you could grow and jump into a new position if needed.

Thanks. I would be going from NJ to the Boston area. It is for a biotech position. The relo is fully covered. I do have young children (not in school yet). Boston is a large biotech area which makes me feel ok to fall back on something if need be.

It doesn't sound as much of a risk. They are paying for your full relocation which is great, more job opportunities and a higher bump? Sounds like a great option. How about the COL? Depending on where you live it could be better or worse. Take that into account.

Moving from NY to Boston isn't quite a leap from NY To LA. You'll still be able to travel easily to NY to visit family (assuming that is where you are from).

I wouldn't do it. I only say that because I did do it, and it ended terribly for us. I moved to a higher cost of living area to pursue a more exciting job. I was working remotely for this company prior, so I was moving to work on-site in a higher position. I got laid off after 2 months there. My fiancee and I drained through some 25,000 in savings the next year trying to find another decent job in the area, but we couldn't.

Only way I would ever make a move like that again is if I was working in a career that was super easy to find work in, no matter where in the country I was looking for work. Even then I would tread carefully.

You forgot one thing ^^^.

"Unstable" is not a positive. If the position disappears, "no income" is much worse than "can't grow in my current role."

I've recently done it. Moved from a government backed job for life type operation to a private company in a sector notorious for peaks and troughs.

In the process I tripled my commute and took on a much worse shift pattern all because it pays about £6,000 a year more so let's say around $8:500/9000.

All the way through my notice period my partner kept asking me to reconsider, my boss did the same and all the while I had nagging doubts.

I still went because I kept telling myself it's all about the bottom line. 2 weeks in, yes two fu*king weeks after my arrival they've announced 150 job losses to come

Do the sensible thing, I think you know what that is.
