Actually since UC is only 26 weeks I think someone should sign up with one as soon as they lose their job to avoid being without a job when the UC runs out.
I thought you advocated taking a few weeks off to alleviate the PTSD symptoms caused by being laid-off/fired?

This is a very bad idea. They will offer you the crappiest, low paying, hard to fill job they have 30 miles away each way and when you say no they will report you to UI for having refused work. Then you will have no income stream until you appeal and try to get it reinstated.
I used to work for a temp agency (like managed the actual agency, not work as a temp). Many employers (especially manufacturing) use temp agencies to staff their positions because it is cheaper for them. They save on not having to pay benefits or work comp insurance on those employees. The work comp thing is a big expense in the manufacturing field.
Temp agencies exist to provide a possible path to permanent employment which is something a person would need if they run out of UC benefits. And even if they are looking for a temporary worker someone still is able to have some type of cash flow while still looking for permanent employment outside the agency.
No, temp agencies exist to provide temporary workers when permanent employees are on leave or vacation. My office uses them to cover the phones and front desk when we have multiple people out of the office for one reason or another.
All of our low- and mid-level jobs are filled first through employment agencies, and are on a temp-to-hire basis initially.
The only way to get into the company is through the temp agency we use, for those positions. For many, it's the way into a large corporation, with good pay and excellent benefits.
Which is why I will never work for a large company again, that and the ones near here do not hire they churn and burn. It is a pretty dumb way to recruit though, noone currently employed will consider you, many unemployed won't deal with temp agencies, if you hire someone chances are they will continue to look for a direct job and quit as soon as they get one, the worker, once they see that it is carrot and stick, will quickly become disengaged...
