I have been considering applying to a fast food restaurant/supermarket/big department store etc. as an entry-level, unskilled worker. The only thing holding me back is the fact that I don't know how many hours such a job would give me. Ideally, I want to be working 30-32 hours per week, doesn't matter what shift. I am being picky because I am getting ready, both physically and mentally, to enlist in the military and therefore I need a little bit of extra time every day to exercise and do research.

It's my understanding that generally speaking, I can expect anywhere from 15-25 hours as a new employee, is that correct? I am not living with my parents and need to pay for my expenses, therefore I can't afford to just work 15-25 hours. Would it be too optimistic to expect to start with 30 hours at McDonald's or Burger King etc.?

I live in Southern California.

I always did third shifts in supermarkets and always got close to 40 hours because I was one of the few to show up on a regular basis.

Usually in these places everyone(or the vast majority of workers) are all working part time while the managers are working full time.

I know a guy who has been working at the same retail spot for ten years and didn't get full time until 3 years in

I wonder if his pay went up too once he went full time.
