I did 50 miles each way. Worth it? Yes. The opportunity wouldn't have come to me otherwise.

Now I drive two miles each way. Still worth it but I wouldn't have had this job without that one. I have a colleague that drives 90 each way. She's done this for years. In some cases it is that job pays well but the cost of living around it still is high and you live in a place cheaper. I met a man once that went from New Haven CT to Manhattan every day.

Alot of valid points. To answer a few questions. .the extra 20k would be a significant bump up and they have better benefits. I found out today that a friend who left my current job and is at the new company would let me carpool with her for awhile. I do own my home, but I would look into moving closer. I think my mind is made up.

This wasn't from planning but I used to live less than a mile from work. I now make $13,000 more but I drive 24-26 miles one way to work. Do I think it's worth it? Regardless of my endless frustrations with traffic, being in Houston doesn't help, absolutely.

I need to preface my comments with this: We lived about 45 miles from work (1.5 hrs drive) and happily commuted for 6 years. We absolutely loved our small community and it allowed us to truly leave work behind mentally (priceless). Not once did we begrudge the cost of commuting. Our drive was some Interstate, more divided four lane, and some narrow country roads.

In order to make that decision again, it would depend on the type of commute. Heavy bumper to bumper traffic and toll roads would cloud a longer distance commute, but we have always preferred to live semi-rural or in small towns and go for a longer distance to work. Affordability aside, putting some mental distance away from work is invaluable and distance helps.
