20 miles round trip, all city street driving. Usually takes about an hour and 10 minutes total roundtrip during rush hour. Outside rush hour, about 40-45 minutes.
I have a rather "different" commute. I live on the edge of the city of Houston, Texas on a small lake in a delightful neighborhood of custom homes, 20 miles from the central business (downtown) business district, where I work. Fortunately, since Houston has terribly slow rush-hour gridlock, I live about two miles from a Park 'n Ride center with bus service on a dedicated bus/multi-person/motorcycle lane which 90% of the time flows 60+ mph. I ride my Aprilia scooter to the Park n Ride (less than 5 minutes) , lock it up, and ride the bus (20-25 minutes). I read or play with my smart phone or sleep if it's been a tough night out on the bus's very comfortable, reclining "airplane" seats. (H-town's suburban park 'n ride buses are more like Greyhounds than typical city buses). Very civilized way to commute!
If I need to do something after work downtown I simply ride the scooter on the dedicated lane all the way and shave off maybe 5 minutes from the half hour commute. This is very fun but I try to ride the bus because my company gives me free passes and I save wear and tear, gasoline, oil, and repair expenses on the bike. Also, it's not very safe to ride the bike fast when it's raining (as it often is in southeastern Texas on the Gulf).
I put under 15, but it takes me about 35 because I ride my bike all year long. I am very lucky and feel bad for those that have to drive. I feel alive everyday I ride and just love it.
Man, I only dream about commutes counted in minutes, I've been doing anywhere from hour and half to two hours each way, for almost twenty years. On top of 8- 10 hour work days, it takes its toll.
One reason I was willing to pay more for a house on the Peninsula, besides the fact I like it here, was that I knew jobs generally don't last forever these days. I wanted to keep my commute reasonable to a variety of job centers so I'd have the most job opportunities. So far my significant other and I have had jobs in SF, San Mateo, Redwood City, Pleasanton, Palo Alto, and San Jose, and we have kept the commute to 45 min or less.
I'm glad I'm able to do this, I don't see how people deal with long commutes of 30+ minutes each way. To me, I'm already wasting too much of my life (2% of my 24 hr time M-F) driving to and from work. I think that is bordereing on too much. I've known people that commute 1.5 hours each way.. so you work 8 hours, drive for 3, sleep for 8, that doesn't leave enough time in my opinion. Many people with massive commutes tend to choose to do it though, so it can't be all that bad for them.
I have to commute by air across the country. I do this an average of twice a week, on standby status. The standby status is the part that makes it bad. It's an hour long drive to the airport, then normally takes several hours at the airport just trying to get an open seat on a flight, plus actual flight time after, each way, every time. I have to do this on my own time, ie I need to be to work on time, and only can attempt to start the process to get home when work is over. I don't get paid for it and it doesn't count as work. I figure I lose as much has four days worth of total time off each month just getting to and from work.
