Eh, I chose my career, or more precisely my specific occupation, early on, and made a series of choices that led to achieving that goal. I had to bust my arse to make it happen, and it took a long time, but here I am.
Grandiose expectations only work for the rich and most of these brats don't 'work'...Rest is merely chance, right job was open when you were in right place at right time.
I think you can be healthy and enjoy your work. Fruits of your labor multiply as do opportunities. Can also enjoy freedom to make job switches overtime to deal with burnout or markets if you keep positive attitude.
It's a combination of choice, circumstance, and chance.
