In your opinion, which is more successful and efficient?

Seems when I messaged on LinkedIn, unless the person has a ton of connections and obviously uses it often, they don't respond or even look at my profile.

Thoughts?

emailing random people on linkedin isnt networking... im not sure you understand what networking is if you think linkedin is a networking tool... its more of a tool after you networked already

you emailing random people is no more than a modern classified ad in newspaper... you are still just taking a shot in the dark, put another way, are you networked with a celeberity because you follow them on twitter/facebook? no... linkedin is same, just because you see them doesnt mean you have any connections to them

Networking = overrated.
LinkedIn = overrated.

Unless you're looking to be a cashier or stock-boy at your Uncle Joe's bakery, the most successful and efficient way to find a job: go directly to the organization's website. Find open jobs. Apply.

Ideally what you want to do is mine your LinkedIn network to find people you are connected to that work within the company which you want to apply. If it's not someone that you know or know well, send them a nice message (with a reminder of how you met, a personal note asking how they're doing, and anything you can remember from meeting them) with some additional information about you and your job search, and ask them if they would be comfortable forwarding your resume and contact information to the hiring manager and making an introduction. This will get you much further than "cold calling" a hiring manger or HR person via LinkedIn.

Networking is NOT overrated. In my experience (20+ years as an executive resume writer), if you do not see results from your networking efforts, then it's likely that you're not doing it correctly.

Yes, you apply to open positions advertised online. LinkedIn is an address book, you link up to people who you like and intend to keep in touch (from time to time remove some unwanted connections).
