Default At what age did you personally find it most difficult to find a job or your or desired salary

1)Due to age descrimination as you got older, at what age did you you personally find it most difficult to find your desired job and salary. At what age did you say the hell with it, I will settle and I just take this job until I retire even though it is not exactly what I want work or salary wise. Was the problem worse when unemployed.

2)How harder is it to get your desired salary and job at 57yrs old vs 50 years old and should you be choosey at 57 years old.

My desired salary increases as the years go by, so I'd say it's a lifelong dilemma. Now that I'm 50, I find that I don't BS as much to get a job. I used to be a pretty good liar, though.

When I hit my '40's I was tired of getting laid off and not having any job security. I realized I had to completely rethink my career because obviously there is age discrimination as you get older and, the job market is tough overall because companies don't want to pay anything for any employees.

So ... I came to this realization. To survive and actually prosper, you need these factors.

1) A profession with a labor shortage. If there's a labor surplus you're screwed.
2) Skills that are in demand (which goes along with the labor shortage).
3) Skills that can't be exported overseas (if somebody in India, China, etc. can do the job, forget it ... you can't compete with people who will do the job for peanuts)
4) A profession with significant entry barriers ... i.e. somebody can't just walk in off the street and take your job. It has to be very difficult to get into the profession with, for example, a college degree required, etc.

So ... I went back to school at age 42 and became an RN because ... at age 46, I've never had any trouble finding a job at a decent salary. But, that's only because I changed my career path ... otherwise, I'd probably still be scrambling for decent employment today.

Of course, even if you meet all of these requirements companies will still constantly try to cut costs and not pay you anything but, at least it's a lot harder for them to do that with the above mentioned conditions.

I agree with the career factors you point out, but how long is RN job in labor shortage? I heard on this forum and others that schools were pumping out RNs because the pay was so good and in demand.

Thumbs up sheri

i think you have a great out look. one must conform to the now and look to see what the future may hold for all the working class no matter what the age. those of us that can look at today and see tomorrow have a very destint advantage. as for me i'm 54, i had my own construction company for 22 years and fell of a building becoming disabled. my wife died and i really didn't know what to do. traveled awhile (8yrs) now i have returned to the states and found i just can't do the work i used to. so i decided... (with my knowledge of construction) to educate myself and become a building inspector. only problem is no one will supply the funds i need to get a 1 week course at the local collage to get my licence. i know my age has a lot to do with it. i have heard every excuse you can think of and excuses keep pileing up. (we now about excuses... they are like (.) ... every body has one and they all stink) whats a man to do that wants to support him self and not live on this bullsh** income the goverment gives. i have to much pride in myself. got any clues for me? please reply, i'm lost with options.

I researched all of this before going back to school.

Even with the increased supply of new grad nurses, it's doubtful that the supply will keep up with the demand.

The reason is aging baby boomers will keep the demand high for nurisng positions.

It's estimated that there will be nearly a million nursing job vacancies in the next 20 years.

It's happening now. I'm 37. Part of the problem is the area where I live, Utah. The Mormons discriminate against non Mormons in general and women specifically. Since most places I've worked are have mostly Mormon management, it's been rough.

Well I am in my early 50's and have been job searching for the last 4 months with no luck. The jobs that I know I can do pay very little, but I am at the point where I am almost going to say the heck with it and just take a job.

Ha...they told me that too, about medical imaging...not so many jobs now, and employers are finding ways to undercut pay. You nurses need to get the schools to stop sending you so many students. I am not saying to close the doors, but believe me, things can fill up and then it is very hard to find work no matter what your credentials are.
