There's no reason with that amount of notice that any job wouldn't give you the time off. If this were a Christmas wedding, I'd say that yes, you absolutely should have told them before accepting the offer. 8 months from now is not a requirement. Relax. You're fine. Congrats on the new job.

There HAS to be more to this question. You're really concerned about asking for leave eight months out. Unless this is in an industry that has very restrictive leave policies (I.e. health care), I don't see the problem.

Okay. That makes more sense. Usually leave has to be requested in advance - usually a few months. I can't see them approving your leave eight months out anyway. I'm not sure they would have guaranteed you the time off pre-hire. I'd put in for it as early as possible, and hope for the best. If they do t approve it, maybe you can swap with coworkers to make it happen.

Why would you call HR? Is it your company process to have all vacations approved by HR?? Seems odd to me since I am in HR and we would never get involved in an employee's time off (unless it is MY employee). Unless this is your company process to report time off to HR, I would explain to your manager and present the airline confirmation (not that you have to, but it would show good faith on your part).

Also somebody else mentioned it. Eight months into employment you should be well on your way to a well deserved vacation and this should not cause you any concern at all. Good luck and have fun in Hawaii!!

It'll probably be fine, especially if you bring it up now. The worst that might happen is that you have to take it as unpaid time off if you haven't yet earned enough PTO by then.

I'm a healthcare recruiter-- I generally only ask my candidates about planned vacations for the next 6 months; I wouldn't worry about a vacation that's 8 months out-- but it would be a good idea to request the time off soon (especially if you're in a clinical role that requires coverage or in a group that only allows a certain number of people to request PTO for any specific time period).

But, again, you should be fine.
