I am in the process of changing careers. Worked in education for about 9 years. Spent the last 2 years as a software developer.
Looking to make a move into Corporate/Software Training. Love technology and enjoy working with people.
Have couple of opportunities in front of me.
------------------------------------------- Job #1 is a Corporate Trainer role.
Pretty much be in charge of running all training programs for company and its various departments.
Cons: Located in suburbs. 1 - 1.5 hour commute each way. No opportunity for advancement.
-------------------------------------------
Job #2 is a student supervisor for a software development bootcamp.
Job pretty much focused on overall student experience in the program.
I would be involved in overseeing course delivery, individual student planning and coaching and instructor mentoring
Pros: short commute (15 minutes max). Awesome location (center of everything)
-------------------------------------------------
Job A is the type of job I would like to move into. But it is nowhere near where I would like to live. If I could find the same job in the city I would jump on it in a heartbeat.
DO YOU ALL THINK JOB #2 would be a waste of time taking if my end goal is to be a Corporate/Software Trainer.
Having a hard time getting over the idea of spending 2 hours a day commuting for at least the next year and half or two.
Any advice would be great.

That's a tough one as I also hate traffic. If it was a 1-1.5 hour commute each way I'd be stressed before I ever step foot into the office. I'm not in the IT field so I can't say whether job #2 would be a waste of time. Is there any way you could move closer to job #1? There's quite a few people in my city who do a 1-1.5 hours commute each way as they come in from the suburbs into the city. I think only you can answer the question about whether it's worth it to take job #1. Just based on what information you've presented, if job #1 would enhance your career that much more than job #2, I'd take job #1. Spending two years in horrible traffic for the advancement of my career would be a sacrifice I'd be willing to make.
Take job #1. Suck up the commute for 12-18 months and move to the city you want to live in. You'll be able to target the exact job you want in your new city.
