Most of the places I've worked have been Y.
That said - I think the problem with theories is that they rely on assumptions and are often set in a vacuum. But in life, we don't live in a vacuum. What typically happens is that even if you seek to have Y,X or Z will creep in. Even if its dealing with a small subset.
As an example:

Nothing wrong with this. But a generally Y environment will likely change to X management style for this worker. In the end, you often have a mix of all three. On the flip side, you may work for a Y company, but your direct manager may subscribe to X.
