I'm hitting my 1 year anniversary next month and really want to get promoted at my current company. The company requires a 1 year tenure before being able to get promoted and some people get it exactly at the one year mark while others take longer. During the annual review in January, my boss talked to me about a promotion when eligible which will raise my pay but I haven't heard anything since. Is it recommended that I bring up this topic again? How should I approach this conversation?

How often do you have reviews? I would wait for a review, not immediately after the one year anniversary. Also, if you get a project or mission successfully accomplished, I would ask for a meeting with the superior. You can have a conversation about work and then bring up the topic. Show confidence but not obsession about the raise. You should bring reasons for the raise, beyond "it's time and others got it already". Timing is also important, so don't discuss it when the boss is extreamly busy or stressed with a deadline.

How much have you learned in the first year?

I would disagree.

Do not ask for a promotion. If you've only been there one year, you still have a lot to learn. I'd put my head down and keep working hard. If you work hard enough and have a good manager they will see your accomplishments and will make the decision on promoting you if they want to keep you with the company.

Case in point, I've been at my company for 3 years now. I'm towards the bottom of the payscale for my position. My manager approached me recently after successfully completing a huge task that was filled with unrealistic deadlines and challenges and thanked me for the work. We had a meeting where she brought up that she felt I was underpaid for my position. She put in a request to have me promoted to a level 3 planner (as high as we can go) and requested that I be moved into the median salary range for a level 3 (currently a level 2 at the bottom of the payscale).

She then said that in the next 6 months she will review my performance, and if it stays on par with my current performance she is going to set up a performance path that will get me ready to be promoted into management.

Never once did I mention that I felt I should be paid more or get promoted. Just work hard and let it happen. If it doesn't, find another job.

What have you done to earn a promotion besides be at your company for a year? How have you gone above and beyond? What new responsibilities have you taken on?

Promotions aren't awarded based on tenure alone. They are earned through merit, and I don't see you listing what you have accomplished in your year with the company. If you go in to a meeting with your boss with an entitled attitude, it will likely end poorly for you.

I'd ask for a meeting and then say "You did say this and now it is time, what position were you considering?"

If he hems and haws then you "Could" say "I see that your promise wasn't true. Thanks" end meeting and look elsewhere....

What kind of promotion are you talking about here? Are you talking about having direct reports where you had none before? Or are you talking about a title change like from manager to senior manager?

Since this is a standard step then yes, absolutely bring it up.

People want to see employees be motivated and driven and people want employees who want to be promoted and move up. It shows drive and initiative. If you aren't ready, your boss will tell you and hopefully tell you (if not, then ask) what you need to to do to be ready.
