It reminds me of a VP at a retail company where I worked early in my career. Sold his soul to the company and thought everyone else should too. His wife and only son worked there also.
This particular company was so "thrifty" that if they sent me on business trips they would require that I leave on a weekend day because the airfares were cheaper. I didn't mind, though, because the place I travelled to regularly was Boca Raton. I was more than happy to spend the weekend on a Florida beach.
On one trip, the VP I'm referring to also was going to Boca, so when the flights were arranged they seated us together. It was a Saturday, I had a meeting with a vendor on Monday. During the flight, he asked me if I had any work plans for Sunday. When I said no, he told me to "come by the store tomorrow, I'll be there and we will find something for you to do." He was quite shocked when I told him no, that i was giving up being home with my family so the company could save a few bucks and the weekend was still mine, I'll see you Monday!
Years later, he had a sudden heart attack and died. At his memorial service, there was not One Single Person who wasn't either an employee of the company or a business partner. No family other than his widow and son, no friends. Nobody.
I thought that was one of the saddest things I ever saw. That company, by the way, went bankrupt (long after I left, thankfully) and no longer exists.
