I have been hearing stories about people who are constantly working overtime or outside their regular hours and I was just curious to know the workers here on CD how overtime works for them.
Tell me are you forced to work overtime or do you work over time by your own choice?
I was just curious to know how much time is interrupted to you to get ahead outside your business hours.
But in general, are you forced to work overtime or do you do it because you are forced to?
Overtime here means more than 40 hours and includes ( On-Call Pager Status, Weekend work, Night work, Holiday work)
Here, night shift is 15% more, another 15% for weekends. I know many that work Friday-Sunday only and get paid more than people who work only weekdays.
Nights have no bosses around so more autonomous, same with weekends plus lighter work load.
Overtime is 1.5 times base rate. Holiday rate is also 1.5X.
In past years I made close to $120k by working 60hour/weeks. Did it for two years and gave it up after paying down mortgage.
Salaried here. But in IT - even as an executive, there are certain upgrades/implementations that I will stay for. I think "forced" is not 100% accurate as my "manager" isn't choosing to make me show up after hours instead of doing it during the day. It's more the nature of job.
I'll also add that for certain jobs/companies, there isn't technically "overtime". There are jobs that aren't based on time worked. I may put in 60 hours this week, but only put in 30 the next. By the same token, I can be "working" at 11pm, or I may be doing my grocery shopping at 10am.

Agreed. When my job dictates work at off hours, I do it.
I'm an IT exec too. It's just part of this business. So I put "forced", because really I don't WANT to work 7 days a week or take some emergency phone call from some paranoid vice president late at night. But it just happens that way sometimes. The problem is, you can't move downward in this business either, or I would. I didn't really get that when I went into technology management, or I wouldn't have.
Salaried Exempt here, which means no overtime compensation.
I put down forced, because though I don't have somebody dictating my schedule, I do have more work than can fit into an 8 hour day, so I have no option but to put in some overtime. On top of that, I'm supposed to have 24 hour availability, so there are phone calls and emails during my "off" time that need to get addressed.
I don't work a lot of OT, but when I do, it's because I volunteer to do so because something major has a deadline and otherwise won't get done on time. It rarely happens though.
When I was hourly, it was a combination of the two. There were hours you could volunteer for, and there were hours that were mandatory.
