How do you keep accessing those old threads? I would continue old threads, but I can never find them after a certain amount of time without lots of needless searching.
I don't think that thread addresses the same concerns as this one. In that thread, I wanted to know how to start my own small business. In this one, I'm asking about how and where to advertise and get organized. Plus, just offering tutoring isn't the same as operating a full-scale small business. People can be freelancers without being small business owners.

Why not just try to work for Kaplan or whatever tutoring agencies are available until you have built up a good reputation as a tutor?
Here are a few:
Requirements
One reason is that around here a lot of the tutoring companies require you to be certified in the subject you want to tutor. English and ESL tutors are not in high demand, so there aren't many positions available. Working independently, I could tutor out of field, and it's not like I'm not qualified. I have a master's in Education.
Tutoring center hours and scheduling conflicts
Plus, we're likely to have scheduling conflicts at tutoring centers that have certain hours of operation. I need a flexible schedule, because I'm pretty busy already.
Rates
On average, working for a tutoring center might pay me less per client than I could make as my own boss.
Convenience
As a private tutor, I could set my own hours, decide on our meeting place, and set my own requirements. Tutoring centers would decide all of that for me and shift the negotiation in their favor.
