Age 30-Southern California: Was making $32k per year at one job. Found a better one that paid $49k per year but it didn't work out. Spent 17 months on unemployment and operating a side business.

Age 32-Oregon: Was making $32k to start and had to leave the job a little over two years later-could no longer walk 10-15 miles per day during a shift due to foot problems. Final salary was $36k per year.

Age 34-Alabama: Made about $2500-$3k per month selling cars. Went to another dealership and worked in the parts department since the hours were more predictable. Took a pay cut down to $28k. Was eventually laid off.

Age 36-Minnesota: Started at $30k per year in Sales (company does not pay commission). This was 18 months ago and I'm now working in Compliance which is a step up in title and responsibilities but not pay-wise. Currently at $34k per year. Pay isn't particularly great where I'm at (especially considering I have a B.S. Degree in Business Administration) but the medical benefits are out of this world. And the working environment is by far one of the better ones that I have seen. Cost of living isn't too terrible here in NW Minnesota.

Hoping my next position will come with a significant step up in pay. Debating on the pros and cons of going back to school for an MBA-I'm thinking my pay/job opportunities would increase but there is the risk of taking on additional student loan debt. I'll be 38 next month.

In my experience increasing your salary is just as much about good old dumb luck as it is hard work. A lot of the people I've seen get promoted through the years for example were just in the right place at the right time...someone quit, someone died, the company was growing and there was no one else there to promote (no competition), etc.

Switched jobs at age 30 for 15% raise, 20% bonus raise, longer commute, same benefits, better advancement opp. At age 34 considering switching for 30% raise and live near beach. Even if I don't take it I while likely switch jobs within next few years.

Started at a company shortly after my 30th birthday for around $49k, no bonus but out of this world benefits. Had a few raises over the years, ended up being laid off at 32 somewhere around $55k. Changed industries, took a huge pay cut down to $42k, spent 6 months there before jumping to a similar job for $52k, was laid off 9 months later. Landed at current company not long before my 35th birthday, at $50k, was promoted 2 months later and was increased to $60k, promoted again a year later, increased to $70k. I turned 37 a few months ago, and am now looking, hoping for an increase to at least $80k but not sure how it'll go.

These jobs are all in NYC btw.

Three jobs since I turned 30.

I started a job in AZ shortly after I turned 30 but don't remember what it paid. Moved back to WA at the end of age 31, and took a job for 8 months shortly after I turned 32. Then found my current job (still 32 when I started), which I've been at for 9.5 years. This one was a $5k year pay cut over the one I had, but this one has a much better work-life balance and the other company went out of business several years ago. Incidentally, the one that no longer exists is the only job I've ever taken I wasn't excited or hopeful about getting. I knew I was going to get it and took it because we'd moved back from AZ, I was getting a little too comfortable being a housewife and I knew the longer it took me to go back to work, the less inclined I'd be to do so.

I've had two job changes since I was 30.

At that point, I was software developer for a major airline. Flight bennies were nice. I was laid off after 9/11 after having been there for 10+ years.

Did contract work for a short time while looking for perm work. Pay was better, but no bennies. Thankfully, wife had those.

Got a new perm job across the country almost three years after layoff. Better company. More interesting job in some ways. Still there after 12 years, and pay now is almost twice what I was making pre-2001.

So...2001. Was in job #1 since 2000, left in 2003. I think back then I was making around 35K a year at the end.
2003-2103. Got two jobs at the same employer, one a promotion. I think the first job capped out at like 45K and the second I was making about 52K (with longevity; otherwise about 50K)
2014-2015. I was in CO, with my ex-wife, and although the COL was lower my salary was lower as well. Both jobs were 35K. We were living with her folks.
2015-present Back in the Bay Area, started at 50K, and now making close to 53K.

Education sector. I'll never see a six figure salary. I have no desire to be in mgmt and working 16 plus hour days....but I'll have a pension!
