I always got to work around 15 min. early. I liked to sit at my desk with a cup of coffee and plan my day.
15 to 20 minutes early every work day for 30 years. Check the in-box and mail (paper and electronic), look at the schedule, clean up the computer issues (tasks due, requests etc), drink my final cup of coffee for the morning and get psyched up to do it yet one more day
+/- 5 minutes or less mostly. I have core time of 9-15:00 and a 40 hour week.
If I drive it takes me 5 minutes, 15 if I walk to get to work. I`m not much of a morning person I get up at 8:30 am and 8:54 is my target for getting out the door and that gets me to work at 8:59.
I have lot's of overtime, so I need minus time and I really don`t sweat a few minutes here or there. I do clock in and out but it's not checked by anyone it's just for me to keep track of my time.
Cardiff, Just how late is this worker-- and what job does he do (or what field is he in) that he HAS to be at work from 9-6? You said he's a good worker, stays late AND works on weekends.
Also I ask respectfully, is it REALLY causing a problem, or do you just have a burr in your saddle about it?
I know he's supposed to be one time. But a lot of things that are supposed to happen don't, and people don't get worked up about them.
My position as a worker (depending on the issue) is that in my office anyway there are a LOT bigger issues than my coming in at 3:02 instead of 2:57 so my computer can be turned on by 3p. When my manager gets those other things taken care of -- THEN she can worry about me being 2 mins late…when it's really not affecting anyone else.

If your job is 9-6 and you walk into the door at 9:05, you will not be productive before AT LEAST 9:15am. AT LEAST.
But you get paid starting at 9am. So per week, you get paid 5 x for 0.25 = 1.25 hours where you are not productive. At a rate of $50/hour, this will cost the company $250/month. If you have 10 people showing up late, this will cost the company $2,500/month.
So you are not only screwing over the company, you also show no respect. Just because it doesn't affect anyone else who sits in the same office, doesn't make it right.
Also, I have noticed that often times people who are late, they leave as early as they can get away with. So now you are REALLY costing the company money.

This is partly why my company is such a 'bug' about clocking in. Used to be we could clock in within five minutes of our scheduled time. I figured out that five minutes would cost the company about $1, which seems pretty petty, but with over one million employees...clocking in five minutes early!...it adds up to a LOT. They want us to clock out 'on time' as well but that doesn't always work out. If your relief doesn't show up or they just FORGET about you, it can mean up to 15 min. late clocking out. At least I can't be held responsible for that one!
My current job is the only job I've ever had in which I'm always barely on time (maximum 5 minutes early, usually 2 or 3). At all my others, I've come in about 15 minutes early. But I have a good excuse, which is that only three employees have keys, (I'm not one of them,) and they aren't consistently on time. I'm not going to stand at the locked door waiting for someone to let me in, so I get there right before we open so I can actually get paid for being at work.
I usually get to the parking lot 10 min early, I sit in my car untill the clock reads 7 then ill go in and punch in which is usually around 7:02. Some days im up to 15 minutes late and its not a big deal as I work in a shop that is not production. There is no reason to waste my time being at work any earlier, I would much rather sleep in the extra 10 minites.
Well, I'm salaried, so there really isn't an early or late per se. I don't get paid for the amount of hours I put in. I get paid based on my productivity.
Based on the standard 8am-5pm work schedule, I would say that I get in fairly early. I usually get in any where between 6:30am to 7:30am. When I bike commute, it's closer to 6:30am. I will usually go to the office gym to lift and stretch, and then take a shower. If I drive, I usually get in closer to 7am.
Essentially, I like to get in earlier in the morning to avoid traffic. Nothing more, nothing less. There's nothing I dislike more than sitting in traffic for more than 30 mins. I couldn't care less what people are thinking about if I happen to walk in a little later than usual. I have a life, and my life does not revolve around work.
Getting to work early or on time is one of those things that doesn't take any skill and greatly improves how others view you. It's something little and easy to do that has a ton of value that not many people seem to take advantage of.
