How does one change industries after working for years in a particular industry.

Say I am an mechanical engineer who is currently employed in the semiconductor industry but I am interested in transitioning into a construction management company that does HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) work. I have no HVAC experience but do have the appropriate degree requirement. All of the jobs that I am seeing appear to want HVAC experience.

How do I land a job at the HVAC firm without having HVAC experience?

Are you really a Mech Eng looking to switch to another field? What's your employment / unemployment story?

I'm a long term unemployed Mech Eng too. But I can also do Tech Writing so that'll keep me alive.

HVAC ME work? Still remember your thermodynamic and heat transfer classes from college? -- I hated that boring stuff.

I guess life is more than being a Mech Eng...
