I started as a software developer in 1988 making $27k. After working temp and summer jobs for not much more than minimum wage, that was a wonderful thing. :-) I was 26.
It took me 25 years to reach 100k. In many companies, long-term employees in IT tend to work their way up the salary ladder much more slowly than new hires since new folks tend to get hired at higher price points year after year and corporate raises (if you get one) can be small (1-3%), so one of the best ways to get a salary increase (besides promotions) is to jump ship for a position at another company.
Also, keep in mind that base pay isn't everything. When I was a programmer at an airline, the extremely good heath and flight benefits were worth quite a bit.

You really have to adjust for inflation when looking at 30 year old salaries. I started at $30k out of college, but that's about $63K in 2016 dollars. Took about 10 years out of college to hit the $100K mark.

I started at almost 54k in 2016 dollars. Still took me 25 years.
I am a bit of an anomaly but I graduated college in 2011 and I started making six-figures ($120-150K varying through the past few years) three years later in 2014.
I am in enterprise software sales if it means anything. Without my commissions though, I would be at $70K base salary 5 years out of school for reference, but would still be difficult to get an equivalent sales job of mine at another company with the experience I have. I started at the company in a lower role and then applied for the sales position when it became available and was immediately hired and transitioned to my new role.
never have, never will
and i am very happy with my life
