Take strolls during your breaks and lunch. I used to love my commute, it was my process time. Maybe pick up some good audio books, self help books, or even learn a new language....it will make that time fly on the drive home.

Move to the suburbs? Or at least somewhere closer to your current job location, especially if you like the job.

Oh god, if the person is young and/or single this is the exact wrong thing to do. It kills one's social life.

I did move to the suburbs, and while it's much safer, I'm not sure if it's worth it. With that said, I leave my doors unlocked and never had an issue.

Ha.
No chance. I am not built for suburban life. Which is why i find this switch so hard. I like action. I would take a crowded subway over bumper to bumper traffic any day.

If you have time after work or on the weekends, get a part-time job doing manual labor or working in a warehouse. This is only possible if you live close to work. Long car commutes are the grim reaper's chariots.

Then you will either have to deal with the commute or take a paycut to remain where you are.

I'm in suburbia and thankfully I work for government that allows us to take health walks, so as part of my morning break I take slightly longer than 15 minutes to do about 1.2 miles when the weather allows. There is a "track" around the main state office complex that is around 1.25 that was just filled with all the suburban state workers doing their morning walk. I think we had a running club with one agency head for people who were more athletically inclined and then others joined a gym a mile down the road and would do that 30 minutes during lunch.
