the higher-ups are unhappy with your performance and you will need to do a performance improvement plan when you come back?

Would you have preferred that your boss tell you when he did, or wish he had waited til you returned from vacation?

Would you think your boss is telling you that, under the circumstances, you shouldn't be taking vacation at all?

Exactly. There are no coincidences in things like this. Use the vacation time to consider whether you really want to stay, keeping in mind that the boss really doesn't want you to.

He's giving you a heads up that you are about to get canned. A lot of firings happen just after an employee returns from vacation. So be wary about your job situation.

Wow. But if that is the case, why not just tell me when I come back from vacation?
Why ruin my vacation AND fire me?
Wouldn't a decent person allow me to enjoy my vacation and then give me the news when I get back?

That's interesting. Why do firings often happen just after an employee returns from vacation?

Well...that would certainly put a damper on the 'ol family vacation...

(Oh, and I'd probably cut down on expenses during the trip...)

They don't have to pay you for unused vacation.

Really, they were probably thinking it for a while and perhaps wanted to test the workload it would put on other employees.

Or maybe they think you'll be less likely to snap when you're back and in a good mood.

I'd recommend using that vacation time to look for another job.

They are telling you before the vacation for three reasons.

1: If when you get back and cannot come up with an acceptable improvement plan, you will be fired. They are warning you, that it may better to cancel the vacation, and save the money to find another job than to come back broke and find it difficult to live if you come back and are fired.

2: They are giving you a notice, when you get back you will have to have an improvement plan, and you had better do some figuring while you are away and have a plan when you get back.

3: They are warning you that you will very well be fired, and you may want to look for another job while on vacation, or look for a job instead of leaving town.

Very honestly they are being kind to you, warning you that you are close to being fired and trying to keep you from coming back from vacation broke as so many people are and then getting fired and find it hard to live after being layed off.
