A former Chipotle employee has just been awarded $550,000 in compensatory and punitive damages because a U.S. District Court jury found her boss fired her due to her pregnancy, according to the Washington Business Journal.
Doris Garcia Hernandez was working in a Chipotle in Washington, D.C., when she told her boss, referred to as David in the lawsuit, that she was pregnant. "Upon learning of her pregnancy, David told Ms. Garcia that she had to announce to every employee in the store when she was going to the bathroom and that David would have to approve her bathroom breaks so that he could cover her work position for her. David did not impose these requirements on non-pregnant employees,” the suit alleged.
Nice to see abusive employers get whats coming to them. This should be happening far more often
I don't agree. One, the "abusive employer" isn't hurt at all. They're NOT going to let a mere lawsuit award affect their bottom line, the cost will be absorbed by the consumers. Two, if you're earning fast food wages, pregnancy should be their last goal.
well maybe next time they'll think twice before firing a pregnant woman.WTF is wrong with these people? were their HR or lawyers smoking too much weed? dumb as ***t.
We had a principal at Chicago Public Schools do the same thing. She gave any teacher who became pregnant bad reviews and fired them. The feds actually brought suit against CPS for the affected teachers. CPS initially tried to fight it in court but it was so obvious and so indefensible they wound up settling and finally fired the principal.
This is awfully presumptuous. She could essentially be a stay-at-home mom who is working to have play money. Some women do that, you know.
Oh I'm quite sure Doris Garcia Hernandez was a bored stay at home mom working at Chipotle for play money.
