Of course someone dead set on getting "revenge" can (and sadly has in more than a few instances) is going to get back onto the premises or close enough to cause harm/death.

Have seen persons terminated all sorts of ways and there is enough worry from employers to justify having security present. Persons react in many different ways to being made redundant and sometimes that news is not taken easily nor will the employee go quietly.

Managers/supervisors or whomever doing the firing have been physically attacked, company property damaged or stolen (including information that could be sold and or otherwise valuable to the competition), other employee or employees deemed to be held responsible for the termination (maybe they complained) attacked, and so it goes.

OTOH have seen/heard grown men break down into a sobbing mess as they begged and pleaded not to be let go. "I've got a wife and kids..." "Puhleeezeee"!
Unfortunately this is true, most people only respond to force and violence which is why violent conflict is the lowest human common denominator through out the ages. Acting as a lone gunman however never gets anyone anywhere but there are enough people in these sorts of situations that things could become untenable in this nation. Frankly its hard for me to feel sorry for the "victems" in these shooting scenarios because these people were likely low paid with no severance and were likely treated with contempt both during their tenure and in their firing.

So if you get shot its kinda on you.

When there are no laws protecting employees from unethical behavior and the major employers have leveraged things firmly in their favor you are not allowed to complain when the heat starts getting turned up. Unless you can get the govt to agree to turn us all into actual slaves you are going to have to lay in the bed you have made.

I worked at a place where if you got fired during the night shift ( threatening a co-worker etc) the dept foreman would slowly walk the fired employee to the front door by slowly crossing thru other depts. to draw attention to the "exit parade"

I always wondered why the fired employee didn't just exit thru the shipping door as it was right next to parking lot anyway.

Save a lot of walking and when the dept head got to front door he would notice his "parade partner" was gone and driving out of parking lot.

No, somebody is getting your stuff while I'm talking to you, so we just hand it to you when you leave.

Why not let someone pack up their own stuff at the end of the day or something when no one else is around?
I know, I wouldn't trust somebody to pack my stuff up either, but that's how it has to be for safety reasons. People hear the news and go be disruptive or violent sometimes, even people you wouldn't expect. Having done this for a few decades, I can tell you it is necessary.

After the person is physically gone, I immediately go and secure the workstation, computer, phone, equipment, and supplies. Then I collect anything that looks like it is personal property and I ship it to the person. If they believe they still didn't get their stuff back, I do all I can to get it to them.

Anything's possible, but I fail to believe the stories in this thread about employers forcing employees to leave without money, keys and emergency medications.

Exactly.

Most companies I've worked at use a conference room by a back door so as to preserve the dignity of the person leaving and to minimize disruptions in the office.

If the person is distraught I ask if they are ok to drive.

This is all done the same even if I hate the individual.

People are acting as though employers are horrible for firing people. This is silly and you know it. You can quit whenever you want, for any reason you want--that goes both ways.

I have never fired someone for misconduct or performance without them continuing after having fair and explicit warning. And I mean I have fired people for some extremely serious stuff that really didn't warrant second chances.

Only once was it attempted.. ( I was self-employed with other contracts in same building) After 46 years of working..I have never before been fired..this was a basically laying off with a letter of arbitrations with $$$ incentive ..LOL It basically was Political ..I didn't care except My patient load would wonder what ever happen to Lyndarn?? I had a rather large patient load..and knew too much about the fairly new Corporate oversight ( going cheap..cutting corners and so on so personally brought in stuff to makeup or their cutbacks) It's shameful really to gain corporate profits..They cut back on simple things that made a difference..So I had no qualms leaving such leadership..BUT missed patients immensely

I was given this letter after I completed my assignment..and basically tried to walk me out the door..and I said..Ohhhh..I have to go upstairs..to collect my paycheque..LOL..What could they do?? I about giggled all the way up the elevator!!

Since then..I did retire..not because I gave up..but knew it was my time..I had some health issues and didn't desire to deal with Business Politics ( always hated politics~ Always Patient advocate my entire 45 years!)..In the meantime I have assisted in Legal Cases..spent a lot of time with distressed family dealing with HC abuses and Family interference with that care etc... So another year went by.. I still advocate..finally gave up my Licence 2015 but still offer my best advice and referrals to this day ..Why pay for it IF there's no benefit??

I still do keep in touch with most fellow nurse's and we share..I just love our collective attitudes..LOL after living with a huge group of gals..after 46 years WE are still on the same page

I don't agree. What often happens is layoffs take place by order of seniority. It rarely has anything to do with a person's performance.

I was terminated back in 2013 and was just told not to come back the next day. Contract rep met me in a grocery store parking lot a few days later with personal stuff.

I was a head teller/personal banker at a bank that got bought out. At first we employees were wined and dined, and treated like part of the team. One day Corporate swooped in and told us that our "job descriptions were being eliminated".
In order to receive severance and be eligible for unemployment, we needed to stay until the bank moved to a new building and until the new staff was in place.
So, for 4 months, I was still in charge of all the money, and trained a succession of Banker Barbies, to take my place. All I asked in return was that they did not show up some morning with a guard and a cardboard box to throw me out.
I would have loved nothing better than to tell them to stick their severance, but I was 64, so never could get another full time job after that.

Sometimes it means you were the biggest threat to the boss and/or didn't kiss enough ass.

I was laid off and there were two other people at the same level. I had been there the longest. The newest person wasn't let go because she did different work that the supervisor would have had to do. The other person couldn't do the work at all. One of the most important functions had been originally split between us but she could never do it right so they have it all to me. When they decided to eliminate my position, they couldn't give my work to her so they gave it to the higher level person who was already majorly overworked.

The other woman sucked up to the boss and made coffee for her every day. She still "works" there and by that I mean talk on her phone on personal calls and watch videos on the Internet all day.

It ended up working out great for keeping, but it wasn't right and it's aggravating that these people still get away with it.
