I want to take a month off from work during the holidays starting after Christmas so I can travel to Eastern Europe to spend time with this woman I met from a online dating site. Giving the cheap cost of living there I do not need much saved but I have saved $ 5.5K for this trip. I'm a contractor and have been for over a year and half. Since I been there I have not taken a day off only couple days I left early for a Dr. appointment. I'm just curious how you guys would go about doing this to get a month off or least 3 weeks.

I'd just use 4 weeks of my vacation time, but I am not a contractor. It seems like many employers to use contractors to be filling in for a specific project when they have a need, and would not like to have someone gone even 2 weeks. Ask, but be prepared to be told that if you go they will replace you.

Are you an employee or an employer? If you are an employee, do you get vacation?

I would ask my employer. First, though, I would make mental note of how long other people generally took off at one time, to judge what is acceptable.

I got 3 weeks off at one time once. I was told it couldn't be a regular occurrence.

I'm an employee and I don't get vacation pay since I'm a contractor. I very aware that I will no be paid for the time I take off. I think I would need to discuss this with my recruiter. The company I'm at for employees who are not contractors get 15 PTO days per year and after that they also need to pay for their own vacation.

Are you able to do your work remotely given the nature of your work?

Why a month? At best you'll only need a few days. Most likely she will have something else planned that will be taking her away during the time you plan to visit or you'll just be left hanging at the airport. If your unlucky, she will give you an address to go to upon arrival and when you get there, he will rob you of everything. Or maybe she'll fly over to visit you and all you need to do is send her the numbers from some prepaid card. Now, if you actually met her in person, disregard the above.

Since your a contractor, can you take time off between projects?

Since you are a contractor they really don't have much say about your time, but that doesn't mean they will still hire you for work.

The most time off I ever took was 10 weeks, but I had a very lax job. Most of it was unpaid, of course. It also helped that I wasn't needed all that much, but at the same time, I was the only one who could do the job properly. Sometimes I miss that job.
