My coworker - a young guy that is relatively new wears headphones and listens to heavy metal. He constantly makes whistling, humming and foot tapping noise. I work in an open office with 6 other people. I do not have the option of wearing headphones. I want to throw my computer at this fool.

I want to ask him to stop but I don't want to be labeled "easily as annoyed" or anything...

What do the six other people think about it? Maybe you can all talk to him (or his boss)....

Given you don't want to talk to him about the issue, your best bet may be a white noise machine or a noisy air purifier or fan. Some kind of constant electric whirr to bring some peace to your ears and cover up some of the noise. You'd be surprised how well it can work.

If that doesn't work you'll probably have to speak to him about it. I would think if it came to it that your boss would agree that whistling is annoying although you may have a hard time getting much interest in legislating foot-tapping.

How is it that a co-worker can use headphones but you cannot?
Don't you work in the same room?
Why is it okay for him to do this but not you?

I would tell him, "I know you are enjoying your music, but could you keep it down a little? I don't think you are aware of how distracting the whistling and humming is. Thanks."

Mod cut: Copyrighted image deleted.

Is he related to Michael Burry?

I don't see the issue with politely asking him.

Once I shared an office with a major who did the foot tapping thing. Thankfully, he was usually in the classroom at the military service school where I worked, but it drove me crazy when he was in the office with me. It was as if he couldn't sit still. The thing was at the end of the class for that 2-1/2 month period, the instructor counseled each of their students privately. Most of the instructors did that in their classrooms, but this guy wanted to do it in the office with me. The week before graduation was a very busy time for everyone, including me, and I was typing away (regular electric typewriter) and he asked if I could stop because it was distracting him! Uhhh, NO!
