It seems like every job I have had, the morale is generally low and many are unhappy. Is your place of employment like this? Or am I just choosing bad places to work?

You might be choosing bad places!
What are those jobs? I know morale is low in most call centers and fast food places...
no, and we got some that could be postal, but in reality it not the company fault, most want to get paid way more than they are worth. dont want to train or go to school, want to come in at 11 take hour lunch leave at one and get paid for forty. no weekend work, no out of town work, no work past 4pm
The company I work for is large but decentralized...employee morale seems to vary a lot depending upon department/location/manager. There are quite a few people who have been at the company 30+ years. Then we have some locations that can't seem to keep anyone for longer than a year.
A few days ago I would have said yes. However, just the other day a team member, who normally works from home but happened to come into the office that day, sat down by my desk and told me that she really doesn't like her job. I did a double-take as we are on the same team and I feel that I have a great working experience. I still am pretty surprised about it. This one person does tend to be pretty negative though and seems to be at her happiest when she has something to complain about so, maybe I should just consider the source.

Most where I work are happy, with good pay and great benefits, challenging work, and a nice work atmosphere. So much so that most are waiting to 68-72 to retire. With recent changes to the annual performance based raises, some are less happy, but they know they will still get something every year as long as they meet minimum expectations.

That can't be emphasized enough. I've worked some jobs that were highly stressful, bad hours, etc, but everyone loved the job, even hung out together away from it. In contrast the job I have now, morale is low to non-existent, management is right out of a Dilbert cartoon. What makes it really sad is the actual work itself is great; literally few other places in the world where it can be done. Yet all management cares about is whose department is logging the most OT hours and getting the TPS reports in.
