That is part of how that person presented themselves and it gets weighed into the decision process along with everything else.
these soft skills are being sorely neglected in the educational process these days. As a hiring manager I interview a lot of people, mostly on the entry level side. They have almost no interviewing skills or common sense. So many times I wish I could just stop a terrible interview and just go off the record with interview tips.

Like that guys who answered "pay raises, promotions, and 'goodies'" when I asked a pretty standard "What keeps you motivated?" question...

The interviewer's issue with the candidate is not that he breached etiquette by taking out his phone and put it on the table. The issue was that she attributed the candidate's qualification based on the fact that the phone's screen was cracked. That's nuts.

Lame. That's like dismissing a candidate based on how shiny his car is.

Don't we kinda do the same thing with drivers? When I see a car that has dents all over it, I make sure to stay clear. There's probably a reason their vehicle has dents.

This is a professional position that requires a college degree. It sounded crazy to me to disqualify someone because of a busted up phone, but I guess it makes sense.

This is true. The phone should have been turned off, and out of sight.

Well, yeah, I can see how you can correlate (correctly or incorrectly) a dented car with a driver's ability to drive. What does a dented car have to do with being a qualified technician of computer equipment?

I don't believe in disqualifying candidates based on things like credit report or the condition of his cell phone. At least for the former there is data correlating credit scores with performance but that's a whole other can of worms outside this thread.

My supervisor said that she immediately crossed him off the list. Her reasoning was "if he can't even take care of his own phone, how will be behave in an office environment where we work with equipment that's worth thousands of dollars?" It seems crazy, but I guess she is right.

My point is that almost anything can prevent you from being considered for a job offer.
Could be he did it for that very reason. If he's not desperate and the UI pays well, why not drain what you can from it?

Please feel free to enter into this century with the rest of us.

No reason to be angry that technology has left you behind.

To the OP, the cell phone should have stayed in his pocket.

I agree that the guy should have kept his phone in his pocket, but the double standards in the hiring world are just ridiculous.
My boss took a call from his wife the first time he interviewed me. Maybe it was the second interview, I wish I remembered. Anyway of course he apologized and I heard him say over the phone to his wife that he was in a meeting and would get right back to her, but to be honest I wanted the job more after seeing his behavior. My family is important to me, too.
