OP many years ago I quit a job similar to this. Boss loved to keep people at each other's throats. After I quit I temped for a long time. I took a financial blow. Through the years I found out there is crap going on at most workplaces.
Never complain about your boss to coworkers. Never. And remember HR does not work for you. Hunker down, look for another job quietly. Again, NEVER complain about your boss to others, even if they bring it up.
Yes, such is my experience too.
Whatever you say to someone will be repeated or overheard and repeated. Backstabbing is the order of the day in all workplaces.
I was in a very similar situation last year with an abusive boss who actually caused me to become ill with panic attacks and other issues. My Dr. Prescribed me medication and wanted me to take a 3 week break to calm down and get away from the cause of my health issues. My HR department acknowledged my boss was nuts, she was universally hated, but there was nothing they could do about it. They recommended filing for FMLA. Two days after I filed my paperwork, my boss decided to fire me due to alleged performance concerns that were never documented as admitted by HR. My reviews had been excellent, so there was no basis for my firing. I have hired an attorney and am suing for wrongful termination while on FMLA.
I did receive unemployment and have a new job, but had to take a more junior role at a reduced salary. Unfortunately, I'm miserable at this job, my co workers are some of the most socially awkward, rude people I have ever encountered, but I have already started looking for a new one.
So the moral of this story is to wait until they fire you and do not quit until you have something else lined up. I had to take my new job out of desperation and it's awful, but now that I'm working, I'm getting call backs for jobs again. It was crickets when I was briefly unemployed. Maybe your company will screw up as royally as mine and you will end up with a settlement. Hopefully I will.
This is a bad company if you are being honest.
HR sounds inept, but dont let them force you out.
Let them fire you and then get a lawyer if they have no real cause. Do your job, document problems and
dont talk badly about people.
I always question how far does "at will" employment go exactly? Oftentimes I hear about slamming an ex-employer for wrongdoing (aside discrimination or sexual harassment) and them settling because they don't want to go to court.
