They've been in numerous Big Box stores for years. Usually in clusters of four. They usually have one attendant. But from what I've seen they are hardly used by customers. Even I shy away from them for one main reason; No hand scanner. If you can't shoot everything while in the cart why bother. It also has a myriad of other problems that together they totally missed KISS.
I've said repeatedly that self checkout has been around for about a decade on this thread. They're now in clusters of up to 12 in my area all with 1 cashier. They have lines for them at our stores. Most of them do actually have a hand held scanner....the new set ups do. Some stores like Home Depot don't have them that I've seen. You still need the cashier to do the oversized stuff, but they also have to deactivate the security tag.
Why can't you shoot in the cart? The system works based on weight. You have to scan and weigh everything. That's how these systems are designed. It's actually pretty simple to pick up an item, scan it, place it on the scale or in the bag. Did that in high school when I worked at a grocery store. Even then I knew monkeys could be taught how to do it in about 30 seconds.
You can't do that at any store. The checker needs to put some security thing over the gift car bar code to unlock it and put the dollar amount in. Alcohol shouldn't be allowed to be self-checked in any store in any state because they need to check I.D. If you can just go do it yourself, what stops a 12 year old from coming in an buying alcohol? I would be surprised if state laws didn't prohibit that in every state.
I've bought gift cards at Target at the self checkout. Got 3 when Iw as there 2 weeks ago. In most stores, the cashier scratches off the PIN number and enters it. Not rocket science. No PhD needed....just a key or coin to scratch off the silver.
Alcohol and cigarettes makes perfect sense because of age limits.
I think if they really found a way to stop immigrants from working, our farms would collapse and the Garden State would be no more. They are on the edge as it is in this day and age, there's no way they could pay a legal wage, sick time, Unemployment insurance, etc, etc. They'd just go under.
Yes, but not always by much. The median wages for a union drywall hanger is $22, so at $20 the day workers are not losing much, and don't have to pay union dues. For the person needing two people for a day, it's saving them $32 plus workers comp, tax reporting and a lot of other paperwork hassles. They are also willing to do dirty work that others will turn up their nose at, like cleaning out a stinky vacant foreclosed home.
I have yet to hear about any one standing out in front of Home Depot getting paid $20 an hour. I just don't believe it, in both Reno and the Sacramento area the going rate is about $10 an hour and can be negotiated lower. Temp agencies only pay construction helpers around $10-$12 an hour, so why would someone standing in front of Home Depot get $20?

In our local store, they actually got rid of most of the self-checkers and kept only 2 small ones. I think it's easier to steal from a self-checker. I would never do it because I'm a Karma believer, but it would be simple to buy organic apples for instance, and put that they are regular ones that cost half the price. The machines goes by weight to judge whether you put the right thing in.

You don't have to believe me, but that's what they get here, offer them $15 and they will wait for a better offer.
I could see the Amazon Go model being a game changer .
I believe it requires a smart phone though . still some people that don't have them so I wonder how that works if they still have an option for those that don't have one .

There's a camera over every single self checkout register. Some stores have a monitor in front of you so you can see what you're doing....they see everything.

Really? I see homeless people sleeping on the sidewalk with iPhones, and at the local elementary school first graders have to be told to keep their smartphones in their backpacks. If they don't have one, they won't be able to use it, not an issue yet since it's only a pilot at the headquarters.

The Mexicans can make this amount. It depends on the guy that picks them up and what he pays.
Home contractors can pay more than $10/hr if they want to, plus Mexicans work harder than other native people. Mexicans don't complain about low pay, bad benefits, etc. Why do you think FORD said they are moving to Mexico?
The point is this immigrant insourcing that Obama specializes in is lowering wages for home construction workers as well as other low-paid workers.
If home contractors didn't have a surplus of home depot workers they'd have to pay more for native workers.
Insourcing + Kiosks + outsourcing = unemployment for native American workers.
The Kiosks might continue but Trump will end the insourcing and outsourcing components of this equation.
Why do you think the US stock market has been going up lately?
