I tend to answer emails in my inbox that come in during regular working hours because I just can't stand to see them sitting there piling up. Even if I'm working on something else, if it's something I can answer quickly I will so I can delete it or archive it. I work in an email heavy environment. To me, this is how I keep sane during the day. But to others, do you think it indicates responsiveness or that I'm not busy enough?
When I was teaching one or another VP would send an email and then call the teacher's room a bit later to find out why there hadn't yet been a response. It was usually due to us being busy teaching but that wasn't an acceptable reason.
If the responses interrupt the flow of your work I can see it being a problem.
A funny story:
When our email would go down we'd call the on site IT person. She'd tell us to send an email reporting the problem.
I don't believe there is such a thing as answering emails too fast. Quick responses are always appreciated and often expected. I used to work in an office where I'd get my butt chewed out if it took me more than 10 minutes to respond to an email.
Working in an email heavy environment would drive me insane, but I'm glad it works for you.
ok good. It does make me feel good - but I know someone who sits on emails because he fears that if he answers TOO quick his boss will think he's not busy enough.
Email should never be meant for instant responses.
Best practices if I can deal with it is to check and respond to email about 4 times a day.
Order of operations:
1) Delete (i f it served no purpose)
2) Do (if it takes less than 2 minutes to respond)
3) Delegate (if someone else more junior or else is more appropriate to respond)
4) Defer (for some period of time based on urgency/priority e.g., later in the day, next day, end of the week)

Whoa, must be nice. I have to deal almost exclusively in email. A normal day is spent sifting through at least 300 of them. A good chunk are deleted, but I'll send at least 100 emails in return.
I like to respond to them as quickly as possible. Get them OUT of my inbox!
i see no problem as long as your quick response is accurate and well thought out. i did have a former boss that would drop everything to respond to any and every email from his superiors but he never took a second to think about his response so he often responded with inaccurate information and unprofessional grammar and spelling.
