I figure this can lead to some great stories where we can learn some things (for example how did you survive?) In my case it was a winter seasonal layoff in the carpet cleaning industry.
In your answer, please specify if it was a layoff or a strike.
I've only lost my job once where it took less than 2 months to find a new one which wasn't all that, but it was still money. I have never been on a strike, I am not sure if they even exist anymore. But, at my current job, we are in a perfect position to go on a strike. But, I don't think this will happen.
Let go in a RIF in September of 2008 (I know, the timing, right?). I had a new job in February of 2009 in my field (property and casualty claims adjusting). I did a little substitute teaching in the mean time and gained a lot of respect for teachers.
Laid off in 2001 shortly after 9/11. Pretty much the last nail in the coffin for the small startup I was in.
Found another job in about a month - doing cybersecurity work within the Federal sector.
I took time to travel and relax during my lay off. It was great. I had job offers along the way but didn't immediately return to work until 4 months later.
Three years almost to the day. 2009. Laid off due to state budget cuts. Haven't worked a full time job since, in spite of trying. Part time and contract only. Social services and healthcare. I am retiring in March and continuing to do part time contract work in healthcare and retail. I lost any expectation of ever being able to do a full time waged job again in my field after years of sending out resumes. Age 62 and program cuts hurt opportunities. I have let go of unrealistic expectations after years of struggle and just glad to have survived the recession. For now.
I got unemployment and had a healthy nest egg, so I enjoyed my period of unemployment. I went to the gym every day, soaking in the hot tub for long periods of time, I slept in and watched movies, read some books, and took a couple of nice road trips. I considered it a preview of what retirement is like.
It was very nice to have a break from nasty, micromanaging bosses, deadlines, stress, gossipy coworkers, etc. The only thing I really missed was the paycheck.
