When there is a lot of snow, my employer will tell us to work from home. We have a fairly strict safety culture.

As silly as that sounds, the city is not equipped for dealing with snow. When we moved to Dallas I was shocked the city shut down. They don't have the trucks, salt or plows to deal with snow because it happens so infrequently. Driving on the streets is terrible because they get iced over and are not safe.

I taught so calls off for snow were made by the school system.

I did, however, call off for a tropical storm. The school was out four days, I took the fifth because I still didn't have power. Some of my students were out of electric for three weeks.

Edit:
I don't really remember now how many days off we had. I was busy and didn't sleep for 42 hours after it hit, so my days may be off.

Only if school was cancelled and the kids would be home.

I predict that comments will follow berating me for leaving my coworkers high and dry, and how I should have a back up plan for the kids. I wonder if anyone will say anything about the guy who takes off to ski every time it snows.

An aside that I find really interesting about this forum... People using the terms "call in," "call out," and "call off." I never heard anything other than "call in sick" until I joined this forum. I "call in" to the office to tell them I'm sick (or it's snowing). Regional? I'm from the western US.

No, but I had snow days called on me when I lived in NoVA. Annoying, because I'd have to burn my own leave because there's an inch or two of snow on the ground.

Only once did I call out because of snow. I was working ina hotel which was owned by a private family and closed 2 days at Christmas. We had a huge snow storm Christmas night and I was not able to even get out of my development. Normally I would have gone in early and stayed in one of teh hotel rooms but it was closed.
