I had a phone interview today and the interviewer oddly asked if I had anyone else on my current health insurance plan or if it was single coverage or something. I can't figure out why he asked that. I think it might be because it's a lot cheaper for them if just one person is on it vs a family. Or they wanted to know if I was married because I would be relocating?
For me, I'd just tell them... "Sorry, that is personal information." Interviewers can ask many things and unfortunately too many companies are wanting to dig into employee business - and too many candidates are too willing to answer. How much you answer depends on how much you value your own privacy.
I'm sure some think a potential employer should be able to ask you anything - but that is not advisable.

The following pre-employment inquiries may be regarded as evidence of intent to discriminate when asked in the pre-employment context:
Whether applicant is pregnant.

Marital status of applicant or whether applicant plans to marry.
Number and age of children or future child bearing plans.
Child care arrangements.
Employment status of spouse.
Name of spouse.
He asked about my health insurance plan. Not directly if I was married.
Seems like an incompetent interviewer and a big red flag IMHO. I'd also guess it's because single coverage is much cheaper but a professional should know better not to ask such questions.
Gap in cost b/w good single and family coverage is $12k/year. That is why he asked.
That's what I suspected, but I've still never heard of an employer trying to ask this. That's why I told them that I was healthy after they asked! Im just going to use this as leverage during salary negotiations if I get the offer.
You answered your own question. He wants to know if you're married and if you have kids.
Two reasons, are they paying to relocate a single person or a family of five. The more people on your insurance the more it costs them.
JMO, I would look at this as a possible red flag about this company.
It could just be a dolt in HR or it could be how this company operates. I mean that's really odd at the phone interview stage.
