If what you posted is their actual response ("It isn't our place to tell you whether or not to go with what you are reading on the Internet concerning counteroffers. If you agree that counteroffers should not be accepted then I understand and accept your decision."), then my advice is to get the hell out of there, as they now think you are a moron.
I have to agree with this. Go for Company B at this point. It was an odd choice to talk to your company about what you read on the internet about counteroffers, and I'm sure they are thinking the same. Before you talked to them, I would have said to take Company A, as long as you had the offer in writing. At this point, Company A is probably confused by you (basically asking for a counter offer and then telling them it might be bad that they counter offered, based on your googling skills) and I'm sure not holding you in high regard. Get a fresh start.

There really is a ton of extremely negative information on the Internet about counteroffers (google to see). Company A could easily say to me, "I see where you are coming from, no we do not see you as disloyal at all and would love for you to sign the offer we presented".

I know there is a lot of negative information about counteroffers on the internet. It can be a risky game to play. I still think it very odd the way you went about this. You asked for something, you got it, you then asked the people giving it to you if it was bad that they gave it to you/your concerns about them giving it to you (after googling, I presume? you didn't google before going this route?). If you were an incredible asset to Company A - someone they couldn't do without- *maybe* they would give you verbal warm fuzzies and ask you to sign. But the reality is that they would more likely feel like you were jerking them around and begin to doubt whether they wanted to keep you around.

I received an offer from them that I did not accept yet. I didn't have the counteroffer concern until now. Thoughts?

My thoughts are that you don't get it. If you believe the online chatter about not accepting counter-offers (or even was concerned about it), why in the world would you SEEK OUT the specific counter-offer??

At the time I didn't think the negative connotations surrounding counteroffers applied to my situation. Now I am not sure, which is why I directly asked my employer.

What did you expect your EMPLOYER to say when you asked them that?

"Yes, the internet is right, you should not accept our offer."

or

"No, you are the best person ever, and we will guarantee your employment forever!"

or

exactly what they said......

which translates to:

"I can't believe this fool is asking me this...."

I already gave you my thoughts. Go with Company B. If you hadn't had that conversations, I'd say go with Company A, but you have, so Company B is my vote.

There is tons and tons of information written by seemingly credible professionals indicating that counteroffers are almost always detrimental to the employee. My employer should definitely understand my concerns and either tell me that this is not the case with them (as they see me as loyal) or they should say they understand my concerns but don't think the counteroffer will work out at this time (as they see me as disloyal for bringing up the other company's offer in the first place).

I am shocked that I can't have an open and honest / candid conversation with company A. I plan to go to company B at this point unless company A comes around.
