Some have it and then take it away...

Earned/Accrued 480 hours of sick leave and lost it last week...

Not a thing we could do about it... several top managers decided to use every last hour and then retire... not quite that easy for rand and file.

I worked with people who used sick days like vacation days.

I will tell you how they deal with it.

Come layoff time guess whose is going to get let go? I worked for a company and when layoffs came two people that I know of were on the list, their work was fine, but both of them abused sick time. One was sick one day a month. Every time she accrued a sick day she took it.

Really, unless it actually impacts your work load(and you haven't said that it does) look at it as it makes you look better, and this kind of stuff doesn't go unnoticed by management.

I have worked for large companies with set days as well as "unlimited". The latter isn't done primarily for employee benefit, it's done so there is no accrual and no impact on the books - for a large company this really adds up.

For "unlimited" companies the onus is on the manager to ensure it isn't abused. Where there is a policy of a set number of days and they are logged, usually HR takes the lead here.

There will always be abusers, and as others have mentioned, they are usually the first to go during a layoff.

Many companies just give you a PTO bucket. You have to learn to work within that.

That is terrible. How was the time lost? Did they change policy with no notice? Convert to PTO type situation and give you no credit? I would be *****ed of losing 60 days of accrued time.

50.5% was acquired by a large company and they do not do traditional sick leave accrual... went from a company of a few hundred to one with 100,000

Two of the senior managers saw this coming and used all of their PTO and Sick Days and on the day they were due back called in to say they were not coming back...

I never needed it but it was great comfort to know it was there and it paid full pay... new policy is State Disability.

We earn 1 sick day per month, and you can accrue up to 120 days. I don't expect that to ever change because I work at a hospital and it would be pretty embarrassing for them to not provide sufficient sick time for people to be able to stay home when needed, and particularly not unnecessarily expose our often immunocompromised patients.

My last employer had a combined PTO bucket, which was awful because they were very stingy with the number of days off to begin with.

How do you have enough free time at work to be able to keep track of what other people are doing?
That you know that much about what other people are doing amazes me.
