I was wondering what everybody thought about this.

Lately I've been applying for positions in a field I was previously involved in- but left.

I may have an opportunity to move back into the field- but not in an ideal role that I am wanting.

Does it help my chances of landing the job I really want by returning to the industry itself?

Or does it not really matter since I have previous work history in the position I am looking for?

It can, and did for me, but no one can tell what might happen in your case. If that previous history brought you skills that are in demand and hard to find, you shouldn't have any problem. I left a 17 year career, ending as a manager after 5 promotions, moved to another state and bought a business. When the recession hit after 16 successful years, I found an opening for a lower level position in the field I had been in originally, interviewed and got it. That was at age 57. I was promoted to supervisor 18 months later, manager a year after that. I have been here 8 years now, and don't expect to make any more changes before retiring.
