Manager is in charge of 2 employees. Both employees made $4,000 total per month. They're both quitting. Manager already hired a temp to fill in for now. Manager figured that the company should take that $4000 and divide it between Temp and herself.

Temp would be getting $2000/month as his salary. Manager would be getting the remaining $2000/month as a raise *temporarily* because she's absorbing more work. When she hires the next full-time person, she'll stop taking the $2000/month. I calculated, and based on her salary, that's about a 40% raise per month.

Bottom line: Is this a normal request? First of all, the logic to take a quitting employee's salary and give part of it to herself since she has to do their work as well?

Second, to request such a high amount as a raise (temporarily or not)? Granted, she has a license in our industry, but the departing co-workers' work don't require any higher degree or a license; they were simply trained on the job, so $2000 a month seems a LOT to me.

Third, to ask for a temporary raise?

I know it's just temporary (thank goodness), but has anyone done this before?

(She approached the GM about her idea. GM ended up giving her $1000, not $2000. Manager agreed.)

Not at all normal. People quit all the time. You suck it up and replace the employee. I've been in similar situations many times and never even thought to ask for the absent employee's salary.
