I don't think I nor anybody else mentioned this (I'm too lazy to go through 7 pages worth of posts), but back in my day, we had 2 cars. My dad got one for his job (that paid all the bills), which left the other at the house. It was about a 15 minute trip one way to work at Kmart. Not huge, but still nontrivial.

Another trend nowadays is that you have both parents working. Unless the kid can walk to his FF job, take public transit (which has to be cheap enough to make it worthwhile. You get to a point where even "building character" doesn't make sense if it's costing too much money for such a lousy, short stop of a job), or a parent does have the spare time, then it's just more worthwhile to sacrifice the FF job so the parents can spend more time with the kids, cook their own meals, etc.
Manufacturing didn't always provide opportunities for greater wages and stronger career paths. Ever hear of the Gilded Age? Maybe just as the problems with the manufacturing economy were corrected, so will the problems of the service economy be corrected in the future.
I really don't want unemployed teenagers to become the norm. Umemployment tends to mean disenfranchisement from society.
The teens today should be 100% focusing on school, particularly focusing on math and science if they want to compete in the future job market. The US is loosing out to countries like China and India where the kids are encouraged to study math and science.
In my area of the country..... new year but same ol story, not enough workers for the jobs.... help wanted signs all over... My 12 yr old son gets asked if he is old enough to work all the time while out shopping.
I can tell the economy in my local area has been improving. The local fast food and retail establishments are looking for help with signs everywhere. Back when the economy tanked years ago, there were people lined up to take those jobs out of desperation. Now they can't find anyone, and the people they do hire do nothing but quit or call out.

I think we reached that state when middle aged working force ended up taking large swathes of FF jobs.
