Dept of Labor site is a little fuzzy on this. Hoping to hear about first hand experience with hiring disabled vets and how WOTC applies.
BTW: For those tempted to whine about how this is yet another corporate welfare program that the boogie man (employer) takes advantage of, we are a very small business that currently hires vets and will continue to do so regardless of government incentives.
1. You ensure the person you want to hire is eligible.
2. You fill out the IRS form and the DOL form sending both to your state.
3. If the state approves, they send you a certificate of eligibility for that worker.
4. You file for the credit with the IRS.
The veterans segment is easy to qualify for since if going for the disabled route, a vet only needs to be "service connected" so they are not require to have been in combat, gone overseas, or even knew someone who was in harms way. So long as they have that "service connected" on their VA card, they are good to go for some free cash from taxpayers. Don't even worry what others think. If they are not smart enough to bilk uncle sam, that's their problem. Personally, I think it's just plain stupid not to hunt down these tax credit candidates and offer them jobs if qualified. And when you think about it, since VTG's have the highest tax credit because, well just because they are veterans, find the vet who's DC is because he broke his leg and now have a limp all from jumping out a brothel's window after stiffing some hooker while on leave. That "disabled vet" is good for up to $9,600 in tax credits. Take it and run! Remember, it's for the disabled vet so it's not welfare!
