Has it become a thing where people just dont use vacation time? I work on a team of 10 and so far no one has put themselves down for vacatiom this summer. My boss said he's taking a few days here and there as did another co worker. One guy took a week in april.

We have 4 weeks vacation! It's already unheard of to do 2 weeks which seems sad...but now it seems that taking a week is just too much. Even if you have no where to go what's so bad about using some the vacation time you have?

I want to take a week but i guess ill look like a slacker if i do.

Why oh why is this a thing?

The new trend is people rolling over their paid time off into the following year so they can take off for weeks at a time. At least that's been my experience and something I try and do as well. If I only take a day or two here or there the work just piles up and I cannot enjoy my time off knowing that more work is awaiting me. I'd rather take a full 2 weeks off at a time so that nothing is assigned to me and so that I come back feeling refreshed and ready to work.

But I would not feel like a "slacker" for taking a week off. You've earned that time off. Screw anyone who feels like you're slacking for taking time off. Now if you consistently take time off during the busiest time of the year, that's another story. We have people who seemingly disappear year after year in the 2 or 3 months we need them the most and it speaks volumes about them. Just try and parse it out so that you're not gone when the team needs you the most.

Use your time off. Who cares what they think? The company gives it to you so you should take it. That said don't take it during busy season or in the midst of a major deadline.

You earned it, so you should not feel guilty using it. Fortunately we are allowed to accumulate up to 480 hours, and can also sell some of it back. I get about 6 weeks now, and usually take 2-3. Selling back a week or so pays for a nice trip. Normally I stick to 1-2 weeks at a time plus a few days here and there. More than that and there is just too much work piled up when I return.

I use it when I have it but I also acknowledge that our country is crazy and things like using my earned vacation can put me at the top of the list when layoffs come around. It's sad but true. I expect this is what you fear as well.
