I've been wondering. Suppose you got a job because your spouse pulled some strings. Is this considered cheating?

No, networking can come from anyone (colleagues, spouse, friends, family members) It's the most effective way to job search.

Cheating what? A lot of people get their start because they know someone. It can certainly cause hard feelings among co-workers if an established hiring policy was violated but, by itself, it means nothing.

Pulled strings? You are going to have to give more detail what you mean. Do you mean, provided false references pretending to be your former supervisor and saying great things about you?

Meaning use connections to give you preferential treatment.

No, that's not cheating. You work to build up those connections. People want to hire people they can trust and someone knows them over a stranger.

No. That's the whole point of having a network and connections. You are SUPPOSED to use them to your advantage.

I've gotten a lot of jobs over the years because of friends. They would call me and tell me so and so was looking for someone like me and they had put in a good word for me.

Nothing illegal or unethical about networking at all, done every day.
