I recently started a new job where I have a one-hour lunch break allotted. Most people eat at their desks. It's fairly rare to see someone leave their desk for lunch, and even if they do leave, they certainly don't take the whole hour. Most people, it seems get back to work while their lunch break is still ongoing. This is unpaid time. Is this the case for many other people here?

Hell no. Unless there is a need for me to stick around, I not only take my hour, I leave work.

No, we get 1/2 hour for lunch and two 10 minute breaks, and they MAKE us take every minute. If we punch in early we hear about it.

I've had jobs where I ate at my desk, but it was my choice because I had a lot to do and didn't mind.

Just an office culture thing, I suppose. Not that I agree with it. Since the hour is unpaid, I think we should get the full hour. But there's no actual clock-in or out at my job, it's just an honor system.

One exception I could understand is people who eat lunch later than the standard lunch hour. The time isn't preset, it's just an hour sometime during the day. So, if you take lunch later than about 1:30, it might look funny to the supervisor if you're missing from your desk.

I've never worked at a company where management 'pressured' employees to work through lunch or cut short/skip lunch. Everyone was always allowed to take their full lunches. 30 minute lunch with two 15 minute breaks, but they did allow us to combine those into a full hour. But they never monitored those hours (except for one company where you had to clock in and out using your ID card).

In fact they take lunch and break periods seriously, and stress that employees have to take their lunch before a certain time period to comply with regulations.

Yes. And our pay hours is 37. So we are supposed to be allowed to have a lunch without working.

My DH is not only not given his lunch hour. They call him on his work phone to tell him he has his vehicle running. So he not only has to eat in his truck, he has to sit there in the stifling heat or freezing cold.

To me a lunch break means I can if I so choose go out for lunch or get out of the office for that time.

We officially get 30 minutes. However more and more supervisors are scheduling mandatory meetings during the standard lunch period because it's open on everyone's calendar (well, DUH!).
