A true story: one place I worked there was a lunch place called "Perk's" across the street. After it closed we lamented losing one of our perks.

Sleeping benefits at work.

I worked in a small company of less than 30 people. The president would rather have us sleep than make a mistake. The mistakes costs the company more money than our salary.

I would see co-workers take a nap of up to 30 minutes, but nobody slept for hours. We were paid $15-20/hr. If we were making 100k+, the perks might not have been there.

Currently, company-paid limo rides to the airport for business travel, a generous meal expense account, paid parking, firm laptop (which I only use for business), phone cell phone (again for business), an in-house gym (although I go to another gym on my own), cocktail hour every other Friday. I love this firm!

NYC businesses do have some great benefits. Mine weren't quite as good as yours, but I had:

Free tuition
Lunch and dinner paid if you worked 10+ hours in a day.
Free car service home for the same length day
Free cell, they didn't mind if it was used for personal calls.
Unlimited sick time, plus generous vacation.
10% match on 401k
Occasional free tix, lots of steeply discounted tix.
Expense account for entertaining clients
Frequent free breakfast/brunch.
35 hour work week. I was exempt, so no OT, but comp was given on a 1:1 basis for OT worked.
Medical insurance wasn't free, but it was super cheap
$10k towards the purchase of a house.

Best perk: When my boss left me alone to operate as I wished and was grateful about the money I was bringing into the firm. I guess I had about 8 bosses. Three interfered and I left for greener pastures in two of the cases and retired in the third case.

I also must mention the employee assistance program, which all employees may contribute to if they wish, and no matter how small the contribution, it helps. In 2011, my home was badly flooded thanks to a tropical storm. I applied for assistance through this program, and the assistance they gave was quite generous. I was able to purchase ALL new appliances!

Having an academic job is really all about trading salary for perks. I make about half of what I would get in industry but I get my summers off, occasional sabbaticals, free college tuition for my wife and kids, a flexible schedule, tenure, the freedom to pursue side gigs like textbook writing and consulting, and countless other small perks. When I was single I felt like it was a difficult trade-off but now that I'm married with a kid I am very happy with my career choices. As long as all of our basic needs are met I would not trade my time with my family for anything.

1. On Friday they office closed at 2 and they were serious about it. Literally if you were there at 2:10, people would pester you to leave!
2. A kindle and $30/month for buying books at Amazon - non work related books only
3. $400 towards a new bike/accessories

I work at a tech company, so I have the typical perks:
1. employer paid healthcare for me + spouse
2. catered lunch, breakfast provisions, drinks, coffee keg, free coffee, beer, dinner if you stay till 7pm
3. pool, ping pong
4. unlimited PTO
5. gym stipend
