Hey, so in a discussion I had with my superior recently, we decided to get rid of someone in the company(due to poor attitude). Although I am this person's supervisor, we work closely together and have a good relationship. I've had to let go of people in the past, but this situation is a little different. We have a good relationship, but this person doesn't play well with others in the company,so the result has to be termination. Its going to be an awkward moment for me.......Any advice?

Often, attitude prone people are emotional. They take things personally.

My advice: do it as dispassionately and quickly as humanly possible.

What do "doesn't play well with others" and "bad attitude" mean? Is this someone who is being treated poorly by others and maybe reacting to that, or is it an introvert who keeps to himself? What exactly is he doing?

I was thinking of taking this approach. Gosh this is going to be awkward.

This person tends to start arguments, and in general, is very resistant to authority.

Is he good at his job? I wouldn't care if an employee is "argumentative and resistant to authority" if he is productive. It sounds like you want staff members who are submissive yes men, stepford employees who wear a fake smile and agree with everything.

He didn't ask community's opinion on whether or not this person should be fired, but how to.

When terming, I make a list, or outline of what I'm going to say.
Agreed, keep it simple and direct, not a two way conversation.
Basically -
We're terming you immediately, you'll be paid through the end of the day.
We show you have 48 hours of PTO on the books, that'll be paid out on the final check.
Your medical benefits will be paid through the end of the month, after that you'll have the options to continue through COBRA.
I suggest you apply for unemployment insurance ASAP, it will not be disputed.
Please hand over key, security card, lap top.
I'll walk you to your desk so you can collect anything you need.

Ah, I see. So you can tell me what I can and cannot post, in someone else's thread no less.

Talk to your superior and ask him if you can put this person on a PIP or counseling.

Even though anyone can be let go for anything, best to cover your butts and have it on record about this person's negative attitude affecting the work place.

Yes it sucks but that's the price people pay for taking on supervisory roles.

No, I don't want staff members to be "yes" men. They can think for themselves. I don't ask my staff to do anything that's unnecessary, but if I do ask someone to do something, it needs to be done. And for a good reason. What I'm asking them to do could be coming from my superior. So by me not instructing, I'm not doing my job or what is asked of me. Sounds like you've never been a supervisor. I could be wrong though.
