Just trying to figure out if this is as good as I think it is. Going from a 40 hour a week job M-F (standard hours) to a 30 hour a week job M- Thursday (start at around 1:30PM). Difference in pay would be $445 a month (before tax and deductions) so difference of $5,340 a year. Same heath insurance benefits

You're only making around $26K full time. Can you afford a 25% pay cut?

No different jobs, different companies.

It depends on your gross pay. For some a $5k cut isn't too bad. If you gross under $50k, that would hurt.

Can you get by with less money?

Personally, I would happily take another day off for a reduction of only $5300, but that is because $5300 is a relatively insignificant portion of my total comp.

When I worked for the airlines I worked 16 hours on Tuesday, 8 hours on Wednesday and 16 hours on Thursday, which gave me a four day weekend every week. We were allowed to pick up or give hours away to other employees. I'd pick up two shifts and give two away.
Still put in my 40 hours, just did it in 3 days.

You couldn't add the hours to the rest of the week.Hour are set, days aren't. Gross is over $50k

They certainly don't scale in a linear fashion, but nobody said that they had to.

Lets make some assumptions.

OP is making $56k for a 5 day, 8 hours/day workweek (40 total). The company is offering her $50k for a 4 day, 7.5 hours/workweek (30 hours total). Other benefits remain the same.

Assuming you could live on the reduced income, I would take that deal in a heartbeat. The higher the base salary, the more sense it makes. Assuming a $75k salary dropping to $70k, that is an absolute no brainer.

Obviously there are other questions. Do you maintain vacation and 401k benefits? Why is the company offering this, as it seems almost too good to be true. Is this a schedule shift from days to swingshift, which may be less desirable.

As OP presents it, why wouldn't you take this offer?

So it's not Fridays off, it's whatever day per week, and that varies, making it hard to plan in advance. I wouldn't cut back to a less than full time schedule if I didn't have control over my schedule. Depending on how far in advance you get your schedule, you might not even be able to plan things like doctor or dentist visits too far ahead, never mind vacations and no guarantee of three day weekends. And if you had wanted to pick up a part time job to fill in that extra day, that's out too.

Not worth it to me to have to basically live on a 5 day a week schedule with a random day off each week. I'd rather work full time and earn a full time salary. Plus I've worked non-standard hours and it gets to be a drag to be out of synch with the rest of the world.
