How many days a week?

3 or less days per week, the later shift for sure.
4 days per week, likely the later shift

5+ days per week, the earlier shift. You miss too much working the later shift for the majority of your life.
Maybe you can work 3 12 hr swing shifts instead

I worked the 2 to 10:30 and enjoyed it. I really liked not ever having to take off work to get errands done and not ever having to deal with traffic. I also generally enjoy having a different life rhythm than most other folks -- call it a personality quirk, I guess.

But ultimately I'm not sure my preference between 6 to 2:30 and 2 to 10:30 is really a choice. I'm a night owl to the extent of full rebellion against early mornings. My body really just can't handle very early mornings consistently on a long-term basis. My sleeping patterns go haywire, I'll get moody, I'll work out less and put on weight. In other words, I'll essentially transition from a burly guy to a pregnant lady.

Can't wait until I'm retired and not having to worry about shifts.
I'm nocturnal by nature so I can see myself staying up most of the night then hitting the sack at dawn.

2 to 10:30. The world feels like it is settling down after 10:30 PM. More peace. I wouldn't turn in for the night shortly after arriving home.

2 to 10:30 i did it for almost 3 yrs ... It was a hoot .. belive me most of the time you can get out before 10 , but again that depends ob your job .. if you have to time it and have a time card then you have to stay till 10:30 but still thats not bad ...
Live starts at 11:00 ... I magine a grt night out after 11 and a good sleep till 10 am ... Nothing like it man ..i dread getting up at 8 every day but have to do it since i have a kid so it suits me, but if no kid then its all the way back to 2 to 10.

Again it mostly depends on your job and your life style ..... but nothing beeets 2 to 10 .

Neither.

True night owls will work night shift 9pm-5am or 7pm-7am(or something similar)

If i had to pick,it would be 2pm-10pm.

You avoid traffic, and there are plenty of places to go after work.

I used to go grocery shopping and the gym after work.
For recreation i went to the bar, usually on Fridays.

Do many live in places with no 24 hour services?

Best shift I ever worked was 12am-6am.
3rd shift deferential plus got paid for 8 hours. Did that for 5 years.
Worst shift 3pm-12 am.
I worked 7pm -7am 4 days a week for 7 years. Sure some things suffered, but I made it work.
Right now if I had that choice I'd take the 6-230.

I would go with the morning shift. My office already allows 6:30-3, which I sometimes do if I hav an appointment I need to get to by 3:30-4 or if I want to get started on my weekend a little earlier. We aren't required to have set shifts and can start anywhere from 6:30-9:30, which is great.

I have worked a variety of shifts from the 6:30-3 to the 1-12 4-day schedule and I really prefer the early morning option, 5 days a week. I like to have a long afternoon/evening. I still have time to get to the bank or go to the doctor most of the time if I get out at 3.

6 - 2:30 p.m., in a heartbeat. That way I'm home when my kids get home from school, instead of currently getting home 15 minutes after they get home. Plus, if I worked the later shift, during the week I'd only see my kids as they leave for school in the morning, since they go to bed before 10 p.m. Not worth it to me.

Now, once my kids are adults and out of the house, MAYBE I'd consider the later shift, but probably not.
