Not necessarily. I know two people, both in their 60's, who do not have a computer or a smartphone.
Yes, we all know people who don't have computers or smartphones. Maybe one or two people even. Might even be the same two people we all know collectively.
Most of them aren't going into an office supply store that specializes in electronics and internet-capable devices. Most people who go to these stores - have e-mail. So when most of the people who say "I don't have it" tell me "I don't have it," I know most of them are lying. Especially the 20-somethings who walk in for an sd card for their cell phone. Pretttttty sure they have an e-mail. And it's my job to ask for it.
Too many customers resulting in clogged aisles, long checkout lines, etc.
I have noticed this in the past at Walmart Supercenter hypermarkets. Nearby, a Kmart discount department store had virtually no vehicles in its parking lot. Kmart may have become so bad everyone switched to Walmart Supercenter.
I used to be a retail store manager (many many years ago). It drives me crazy if someone doesn't acknowledge me when I enter the store. Most likely I can find what I need elsewhere and I'll leave!
"I don't have a phone"
"I don't have e-mail"
"90210."
Though, I would still be kinda mad I had to answer questions I should never be asked.. might not shop there anymore.
Retailers including gas stations require Zone Improvement Plan Codes, usually by direction of card issuers, for purchases made with debit and credit cards. Many fraudulent and stolen cards are being used these days to make fraudulent purchases. Criminals are being weeded out.
And "this comes with an optional 2-year extended warranty" can get "I'm good, thanks anyway" and no one will take offense.
I have seen customers back with broken products they declined to cover with a warranty plan six months earlier at the time of purchase. Customers think the manufacturer or the store will cover it. Manufacturers and stores do not cover products that are not covered by warranty plans. Customers have an opportunity to decide whether to spend the full cost of another product because the initial product broke and did not have a warranty plan, or having their product serviced at no charge under the warranty plan.
I was at Home Depot last night. I couldn't find an associate to assist me for the life of me. I ventured around the store for a good 10-15 minutes looking for someone to help. After walking around the store, it seemed like they had a handful of employees manning the entire store. I don't know if you've been in a Home Depot or a Lowe's, but these stores tend to be very large.
It seems that some of the bigger stores like Home Depot or Lowes or Costco staff the fewest associates per square foot of their store.
Oh ya, I know how that is. My dh works pt at HD and he gets very frustrated when he's trying to man 3 departments. You can't blame customers for being frustrated, but they can't or don't hire enough people. Hubby has mentioned that he's heard they can't find enough people to hire that can pass a drug test.
That's why they hire so many ex military and retired people....usually not druggies.
I work at a grocery store, and I have had several customers come through my line with earbuds in their ears. That tells me that they do not want to be acknowledged by any employee. Nor do they want to talk to anyone.
I have also had customers come through my line who are texting on their phone. That also tells me that they do not want to be acknowledged by any employee.
Yet we have customers who complain when we do not acknowledge them.

What gives?
As a retail worker myself, I find it's a darned-if-you-do-darned-if-you-don't business. As I alluded to earlier, I'm thankful that we have have retail establishments at all, because I'm a lousy hunter-gatherer.

We don't even have Kmart anymore in my area (I live in Albany County in NYS). The one just up the hill from where I live went out of business about 2-3 years ago.
