I think my background paired with my creative degree which focuses on the creative aspects, would be a marketable pairing for many employers but so far ive been proven wrong.
Many marketing and communications positions today involve communications plan, writing news releases, photography, and graphic design. Can you put a portfolio piece together including the above for a hypothetical launch of a new product, concept, program, or project? Can you put together three diverse examples for three diverse client needs? Can you demonstrate three distinct styles? If I were in your position and wanted to focus on graphic design background, that's what I would do. Also, are your skills with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, In-Design up to date? Can you throw in Adobe Premiere to show advanced skill set with video editing?

Can you update your skills and portfolio in your spare time? Do you have a good template of a communication and marketing plan?

.

Ill be honest, my design skills arent top notch anymore from a technical aspect I dont think. Since I never got my break in the industry, I never had a chance to find out if I ever had what it takes. The most I ever got to do since completing my degree was a handful of flyers for friends who promote parties and a promo brochure for a buddy who launched a women's clothing line. I also created some promotional handouts for events within companies Ive worked for within education. I was also responsible for gathering resources and advertising this event on social media. Both events were highly successful. I was also tasked with updating all of the cover design and page layouts for the graduation programs used at 2 trade schools ive worked for. The first of which I did 5 years ago and is still used today according to a friend of mine who still works there. All of this work was done in illustrator and photoshop.

Having mentioned all this my job search has focused on roles where the design skill is really just a bonus, and the knowledge of addressing a clients communication needs is more the focus. I think the ship has sailed with respect to becoming a pure designer at this point.

Not in my universe. Our marketers need to have good communications skills, content development experience and a lot of project management experience.

Being a good writer is really helpful since there is email copy, website copy, and blog copy that needs to get done.

Understanding tools like google analytics, email communications tools, and CRM systems like Salesforce is high priority. Understanding how to report on marketing performance and do some basic analysis is critical as well.

News releases, photography, graphic design? There are specialists for these functions. Hardly anyone bothers with news releases anymore, unless you are big enough to potentially have people in the financial markets that car about what your company is doing. It is only a very small subset of companies that needs news releases.

More useful is "growth hacking" and people able create your own PR. That works for all organization sizes.

This is very interesting conversation here, as I think what I am searching for is somewhat of the medium between both job functions represented here. I am interested and have experience/capacity to handle some of the functions on either side and could get better fairly quickly with some coaching/training. Again however, the question is posed, does such a job actually exist?

There might be. But so far you haven’t actually sold any of us why you would be a worthwhile employee to take a risk with. You need to do some sole searching and document your professional skills and accomplishments so you can actually tell this story to potential employers.

What I am hearing from you now is, I have done a bunch of stuff, I want to do something different. And you need to figure out how to translate my random experience into something that is useful for you.

Being a good storyteller is a good skill for marketing and sales roles. And you’ll need to hone that skill for any of your next career ambitions.

You need to take the onus of figuring out how your skills will translate to business value.

I appreciate your advice here. I think what you are saying is just where my job search has come to a standstill. My job history make sense to me but Im still unsure how others view it. Ive come up with my own ideas on how things can translate but Ive never had any constructive criticism on it. Is there anyone you recommend or any techniques that might help? Heck, would you be open to taking a gander at my resume or linked in? Just a shot in the dark but you seem to know your stuff. Im desperate to get some feedback from someone outside of my group of friends and family.

Bump.

I have received a great deal of information from people here and I am truly appreciative. However, I took that new information and found job areas that are an even better fit for me and im still not getting calls back. Reluctantly, I think maybe people following this thread could offer more help with specific information about my background. Im fairly confident no one associated with my company is on here so here it goes:

Over the last 12 -13 years I have done the following:

4yr retail sales - best buy/At&T wireless
1yr management training - enterprise rental
1yr - admissions(sales/marketing) - AI
3yr - admissions (sales/marketing)- Everest college
6 mo - admissions (sales/marketing) - Heritage college
2yr - career services (sales/marketing/recruiting)- TWS- current job

Can anyone offer any areas or even companies that could use me for something just above entry level?

The bulk of your experience seems to come from college admissions. I am not sure how that would transfer to another industry or career field beyond starting at the bottom/entry level somewhere else.

So in your opinion what does someone in my position do? Im 33 years old with a a wife and kid, I dont see any way to roll back the clock and start from the bottom. It costs $800 a month just to keep my kid in daycare. Have I really screwed my career up that bad to be stuck like this?
