like he said it depends on the industry. I have a bunch of friends in construction/excavating/surveying, most have no 401k and the ones that do have low or no match.
I'd imagine it also varies regionally as well as per industry.
Here in the northeast where tech jobs are common and competing for talent is aggressive, not having a match is unheard of in my industry.
Every employee gets 2% without putting anything in.
We are matched at 50% for every % that we put in up to 6%.
An employee that puts in 6% will get a 3% match plus the additional 2% that we get without doing anything. Not a bad return for investing 6% of your money.
A year ago we were told that once a year we would have our contribution increase by 1% a year until we get to 10% a year, unless we opt out. Not that it effects me as I am putting in over 10% of my income already.
Perhaps the OP works in a field that is notoriously stingy like retail or banks and thus has a skewed perception of companies still matching?
I worked for a large international bank, and got 100% matching up to 8% of my salary. Looking at Glassdoor, BoA, Wells Fargo, Chase, Citigroup, Capitol One, and PNC all offer different percent matching on their 401Ks, some better than others (and some not matching for the first years of employment).
Yes, to varying degrees. We have one employee who’d match 50% up to 8% total contribution, and another with 100% match up to 6%. It depends but we won’t go with an employer who doesn’t offer some sort of match or similar benefit when so many in my husband’s field do.
