I am in a psychology program, at umuc. I have a year left before completion . The dilemma is I know it will be hard to find a decent paying job over 40k with this degree. I am currently in the healthcare field and would like to stay in the field so I've weighed my options and I am interested in the respiratory therapy field as well as a Physical therapist assistant .
I am currently working in a hospital as a tech. The hospital is willing to pay a nice portion of it . I just can not afford to go too Grad School . I am also okay with making 54k - 60k . Bothe fields make a decent amount but PTA just seems boring after awhile. I would like insight in both fields and possibly the competitiveness and the course load into the program . I do understand the latter for income isn't that significant .
I am in Baltimore
RT career field is in demand IMO. As long as people are living longer and unfortunately those who smoke and patients with COPD, pneumonia and other lung ailments there will always be more than enough patients who will need this type of care.
I just recently graduated from an Rt program and in the process of taking my board exams to be registered to work in CA. I say talk to a friend or an aquaintence who are in both fields and see if you can piggyback them while they are working to give you an idea of what they do on a regular basis.
Both can be rewarding just see what you like. As an RRT I can work in different environments such as a pulmonary rehab clinic, sleep disorder testing, pulmonary function testing, I can also work in a hospital by giving beathing treatments and manage mechanical ventilators for those pts who cannot breath on ther own. Lots of options.
RT and PTA are both high demand fields, PTA more so. However PTA is more physically demanding, be sure to consider that. RT on the other hand, rarely so.
I would choose PTA due to higher growth projection, but both are great jobs.
